Bangkok in Photos

After our first day of exploring the Chatachuk Market, we’ve been braving thousands of Chinese tourists to gawk at gaudy palaces, seen Buddhas both big and small, creeped on some grandmas, visited a beautiful old teak house, and stuffed our faces with more delicious Thai food.  Here are some photos documenting our adventures:

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
We took a river ferry down the Chao Phraya River to reach the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

Statues of giants guard the Grand Palace (where the Thai royalty lived for centuries) and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

I told Jordan this looks like a CrossFit move. After warm up, squat and support massive golden temple for centuries.

I felt like we were on the set of “The King and I”!

Check out this Thai grandma! With her big hair and strawberry earrings, she could be straight out of Plant City.

Making a Khai Jiao (Thai-style omelette) for lunch outside the Thammasat University Bookstore. It must be a universal truth that good, cheap grub can be had near universities.
Wat Pho
A very dapper giant manning the entrance to Wat Pho, home of the Reclining Buddha.

The golden Reclining Buddha is an impressive 15 meters high and 43 meters long.

He’s passing into nirvana and sure looks pleased about it.

Jim Thompson House
The gardens at Jim Thompson House, home of an American silk magnate. He mysteriously disappeared in Malaysia in the 1960s, but his beautiful teak house is still open to visitors.

Aren’t these silks gorgeous?

The pool at our hotel, the Aloft Sukhumvit Soi 11. Fancy and, due to Starwood points, free!
